ABSTRACT

 

      A  Study  of   Khantiparami  of   Bodhisatta  in  Jataka  Stories aimed to (1) study the concept of tolerance perfection of Bodhisatta or Buddha-To-Be in Buddhism (2) to investigate the conduct of  tolerance perfection in Buddhism, and (3) to explore how tolerance perfection can be applied for better quality of life. The study showed the following results.

     The concept of tolerance perfection of Bodhisatta or Buddha-To-Be in Buddhism. The word Parami refers to accumulative meritorious acts performed by Bodhisatta or Buddha-To-Be , whereas the word Jataka means stories of  Bodhisatta who had performed various different meritorious acts in the past lives. The significance of Jataka stories is that the stories can be used in explaining the teachings of Lord Buddha to make it more interesting and understandable. The Jataka stories are classified into two types: Inside Nibata and outside Nibata. Every story consists of three elements: (1) Introduction, (2) Stories in the Past, and (3) Conclusion.

                 The conduct of tolerance perfection in Buddhism. There was a series of stories involving Bodhisatta conducting tolerance perfection in the former lives to demonstrate the value and significance of being tolerant. The series or chronological order of the stories were of two types: (1) Anitaya Bodhisatta and (2) Nitaya Bodhisatta. There were three levels of tolerance perfection of Bodhisatta: (1) Basic, (2) Intermediate, and (3) Supreme, depending on individual efforts. The important value of tolerance perfection practice is to remove or reduce  greed, anger, and delusion leading us to a happier and healthier life.             

                     Applications of tolerance perfection in developing the quality of life. The practice of tolerance perfection can be applied both to body and mind making us more tolerant and stronger toward unfavorable or difficult conditions, such as cold, hot weather, or in observing the Five Precepts. It also makes us more tolerant toward other people’s behaviors, in order to avoid hurting or harming them. In short, the practice of tolerance perfection for developing the quality of life allows us to gain six benefits: (1) strong and determined mind, (2) good behaviors, (3) charming and pleasant personality, (4) cultivation of precepts, concentration, and wisdom, (5) eradicating the root causes of all evils, and (6) easier and quick spiritual enlightenment, such as in the case of Boddhisatta.
