Abstract

A Comparative Study of Meditation Practice of Luang Phor Thian  Citasubho  and Luang Phor Jaran  Thitadhammo had 3 objectives: 1) to study  principles and approaches of meditation practice  in the Buddhist Texts, 2) to study concept of teachings and approach relating  to meditation practice according to the approach of Luang Phor Thian  Citasubho and Luang Phor Jaran  Thitadhammo and 3) to compare the  meditation practice of  Luang Phor Thian  Citasubho and Luang Phor Jaran  Thitadhammo.

The research is the Documentary Research by studying the primary data on Tipitaka  and the secondary data on the commentary, the sub-commentary, the sub-subcommentary, Visuthimagga literary works , texts and related researches for analysis of data.

Results of the Research

1) Meditation means the location of the mind’s work. There were two types of meditation: 1) Samatha-kammatthãna (tranquility development) and 2)Vipassanãkammatthãna (insight development).  In Tipitaka, meditation means working in the duty of layman and monk. However,  in the commentary, meditation  is defined the meaning  briefly by focusing on training the mind  for  the concentration and the knowledge to find the final objective in the Buddhism. The principle and the content of the meditation practice in Mahasatipatthanasutta indicated the practice of mind and The Lord Buddha praised that the meditation is the only one way that passed the sadness, achieving the Dhamma into Nivarna.

2) Luang Phor Thian Citasubho and Luang Phor Jaran Thitadhammo were the  meditation monks who had the origin of the meditation study and practice: Anapanasati controlling the breathing and speaking ‘Bud-Dho’. Luang Phor Thian Citasubho studied the meditation when he was young. However,  Luang Phor Jaran Thitadhammo studied the meditation when he was the monk. Luang Phor Thian Citasubho studied the mediation by citation of “Move- Stop”. Then, he stopped that citation and controlled the movement. It made the development in the practice. He also thought the meditation to the Buddhist. Luang Phor Jaran Thitadhammo studied the meditation and the magic from the famous monks such as Luang Phor Derm, Luang Phor Wat Pak Nam and Luang Phor Lee etc. Next, he studied the meditation from Phra Thammathreeraratchamunee (Chodok Yanasitthi) and practiced Vipassanãkammatthãna to make the development in the practice. He thought Vipassanãkammatthãna to the Buddhist.

3)  Luang Phor Thian used the local language of Loei province for propagation and description of the Dhamma. However, Luang Phor Jaran used the language of the central region and The Dhamma Language from the Pali language systematically. Luang Phor Thian explained Satipatthana that it was the mindfulness development and the movement of body by controlling the mindfulness according to the movement. Luang Phor Jaran thought the controlling of mindfulness according to Satipatthana: controlling the body, the feeling, the mind and the Dhamma. The controlling of the mindfulness in the main to the minor had to the movement of some organs all the time without the citation. Luang Phor Jaran used the controlling of rising-falling of stomach and cited the name of the movement and the feeling at that time.
