Abstract

This thesis is of the three objectives as follows: 1. to study the concept about the leaders in the Therav±da Buddhist Scriptures 2. to study King Bimbis±ra’s roles of being leadership in Therav±da Buddhist Scriptures and 3. to study the principles that promote King Bimbis±ra’s leadership appearing in Therav±da Buddhist Scriptures. This study is a qualitative one. It is the study of documents which show the way of description.

From the study, it is found that : in the Therav±da Buddhist Scriptures there is the need for having the leader in human societies to cause the people to live together in peace. Thus, the leadership arose to maintain peace and order in societies. The leaders who show their roles received the names of the being the great suppositors and the Kings. So, the leaders mean the persons who receive the approval  from the groups of the people as the persons who help all the people to work together in the fixed direction to the right directions with  doctrinal principles which the leaders can bring to be the instruments in leading the people to their aims. Such the Doctrinal principles are Dasabidhar±jadhamma, Cakkavattidhamma, Brahmavih±radhamma, R±jasangahavatthu, Sappurisadhamma and Aparih±niyadhamma.

King Bimbis±ra, the ruler of Magadha State, was of the firm faith in Buddhism and applied the Dasabidhar±jadhamma, Cakkavattidhamma, Brahmavih±radhamma, R±jasangahavatthu, Sappurisadhamma and Aparih±niyadhamma to ruling the mentioned state. This causes his roles to be distinguished in the administration of the State, the support of education, the protection of the country, the support of  peacefulness, and the development of the relationship, with other states. Especially, King Bimbis±ra was of the roles of being the leadership in supporting the education, because he supported the people to have the education according to the principles of Tisikkh± together with the mind and wisdom development which causes the people to be free from suffering and have real happiness.

The Doctrinal principles supporting King Bimbis±ra’s leadership are divided into two parts. The first part is that he brought the Doctrinal principles to be used in the states, such the Doctrinal principles are Mett± and Karun± in Brahmaviharadhama. In The Buddhacakra, the king used D±na in Dasabidhar±jadhamma to support Buddhism. In the second part, King Bimbis±ra used the above mentioned Doctrinal principles in the different states. Such the Doctrinal principles are Cakkavathidhamma of Dhammik±rakkh± which is to get rid of the suffering and to support happiness. King Bimbis±ra used Purisamedha in R±jasangahavatthu to support happiness. From this reason, King Bimbis±ra was the leader of the gentleness and the compromise, but he was of the power in dhamma.
