The Influence of the Buddha’s Virtue of Lokavidù over Thai Literature

Abstract

 

ABSTRACT

 

The 3 objectives of the thesis on The influence of the Buddha’s Virtue “Lokavidù” on Thai literary work are to study the meaning of the Buddha’s virtue of Lokavidù in Buddhist script, to study the types of world enlightened by the Buddha and to study the influence of the Buddha’s virtue of Lokavidù on Thai literary work.

On the result of research, it has been found that the word “Lokavidù” in the Buddhist script means the knower of the world. The word Knower means the Buddha knows 3 worlds; 1) Sankhara Loka means the Loka is the world of formation, 2) Sattava Loka is the world of beings and 3) Okasa Loka is the world of location. The types of the world realized by the Buddha are 1) Sankhara Loka means formations, things formed by factors, in three characteristics, it means body or form composed of 4 elements, is of 2 kinds; (1) Upadinnakasankara is the kammically grasped phenomena and (2) Anupadinnakasankhara is the kammically ungrasped phenomena. 2) Sattavaloka means those who are concerned with 5 Khandhas satisfactorily. Satava means beings having life, feeling and being moveable, including living things with 2-4 or more feet and without any feet except plants and trees ,Deva, Mara and Promma etc. 3) Okasaloka means the world defined by occasion, existing in space. Location for beings to live, earth for beings to live, Universal.

 

The influence of the Buddha’s virtue “Lokavidù”, on Thai literary work is as follow; having an influence on Thai literary work “Trai bhumikatha or Traibhumipraruang” with explanation that the Buddha realized  the following worlds; Loka in the Buddha’s virtueLokavidù” means 3 worlds (Bhumi); 1. Kamabhumi (kamaloka) consisting of 3 main kinds; 1) Abayabhumis, 2) 1 Manussabhumi,             3) 6 Devadabhumis, all of these are called 11 Kamabhumis, 2. Rupabhumi (Rupaloka) is of 16 kinds; 1) 3 Pathamajanabhumis, 2) 3 Dutiyajanabhumis,               3) 3 Tatiyajanabhumis and 4) 7 Catuthajanabhumis, all of these are called 16 Rupabhumis” and 3. Arupabhumi (Arupaloka) is of 4 kinds; such as Akas ananancayatana etc., it totals 31 Bhumis called Traibhumi”

 “Loka”, in Thai literary work in Ayudhaya period, appeard in 35 stories in some books such as Kap, mahachat etc. In the period of Thonburi, 8 stories had been appeared in some books such as Rammakian drama etc., in the period of Ratanakosin (religion group), there were 3 books; Mahawankha script, Lanka phongsawatara etc., in modern (present) period, the present Thai poetries such as Banthoengkhadi” etc. when it is said in summary, (1) Loka” means the group of human beings, (2) Loka means the earth for living and (3) Loka means Sankharas those are compounded and decayed things of the world. It is the emotional compounding in 6 ways; Ruparamana, Saddaramana etc. (4) Loka means decaying those are Cakkhupasada, Ruparamana, Cakkuwinyana and Cakkhusambhassa which are decaying in common.Even getting happy-unhappy or unhappy-unsuffering condition, occurring because of Cakkhusamphassa, the factors that are decayed in common etc. The meaning of Loka appearing in Thai literary work, it is Loka in the past (effected on the present Loka) there are other Thai literary works in which the meanings of Loka are very different.
