The Buddhism Promotion in the Reign of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn

Abstract

ABSTRACT

              The Thesis is of 3 objectives, namely 1) to study the promotion of Buddhism before King Chulalongkorn’s ascending to the throne, 2) to study the promotion to Buddhism during his reign and 3) to study the results of the changes of the promotion Buddhism by King Chulalongkorn’s.

              From the research, it is found that the state of Buddhism before King Rama the 5th’s ascending to the throne. King Rama 4th gave the importance to Buddhism on the side of the Buddhist Scriptures, the Sangha’s education, the Sangka’s administration, the spreading of Buddhism, the building and the promotion of Buddhism to cause Buddhism to be permanent.

              Later on, in King Chulalongkorn’s ruled the country and had to face with the threats from the new imperialism. This point caused the King to develop the people to have the Knowledge equal to the foreign countres. Then, he improved the country on many sides and broadly, such as to set up the ministries and departments. On the side of Buddhism, He promoted Buddhism on many sides 1) On the side publishing the Tipitaka of the Siamese alphabet. It is the change from the inscription on the palm leaves to be on the paper. He also produced manay Buddhist books, 2) He promoted the Sanga’s education by establishing Mahachulalongkorntajavidyalaya  and Mahamakut Rajavidyalaya and gave a chance to Somdet Phra Maha Samana Chao Krom Phraya Vajirananavarorasa to approve the curriculum of leaning curriculum Phra Pariyatti Dhamma. 3) He allowed to have the Royal Act of the Parliament which is the characteristic of administratiny the Sangka in Ratnakosindra Period of 121, 2445 B.E.  4) On the side of spreading Buddhism, the King offered the Tipitaka to many temples in the country and to different universies in the forein countries, and 5) On the side of building and restoring the temples throughout the country, He built Wat Benjamabophit Dusitvanaram etc.

   The overall operation, taking care of Buddhism cause the Buddhist monk studying Phra Pariyatti Dhamma, the Tipitaka and a high academic. People have study the teaching of Buddha to widespread and extensively. After that the great deity association happen, there have an affect on administration of Buddhism to be nice and tidy, far and wide since the past to nowadays.
