Abstract

Abstract

The objectives of this thematic paper are: 1) to study the Five Precepts in Buddhism and 2) to do the analysis of the principle of the Five Precepts in making peace in Thai society. This research was conducted based on Qualitative Research Methodology and field works study including with analysis approaches.

The result of the study found that the Buddhist teachings emphasized on the mutual relation of the things in the world. All phenomena were depending on each other on the chain of the Depending Origination (paticcasamudpada). On the one hand, every actions of a man eventually resulted to the less of the society. Thus Buddha focused on the basic principles that in order to keep society peaceful, there should be the basic rules of living that was the Five Precepts.

The teachings on the Five Precepts were already proved and guaranteed for making peace in the society. For instance, 1. preventing from killing or making harm to the other beings equalized to making the life’s insurance for oneself; 2. preventing from taking other belonging equalized to protecting one own property; 3. no miss-sex intercourse lead to harmony in the family; 4. talking only the truth was owning the trust from the others; and 5. not drinking of intoxication equalized to the free treatment. Therefore, the Buddha pointed out that the Dhamma would protect those who practices the Dhamma (Dhammo have lakkhati dhamma jari). Therefore, if members of the society accordingly practiced and hold up the teachings and principles of the Five Precepts; the society would live in peace and that result also would reflected on the less of the society and therefore lead to the sub-standable and peaceful society at last.
