Abstract
This thesis is of 3 objectives: 1) to study the conceptual idea of peace in Buddhism, 2) to study the conceptual idea and the means of peace building according to PhraDhammakosajarn (Buddhadassa Bhikku)’s, and 3) to analyze the role of PhraDhammakosajarn (Buddhadassa Bhikku) in peace building in Thai society, which the tool used isfield-work qualitative documentary research with an in-depth interview of 8 key informants.
From the analytical research, it is found the following:
(1) The conceptual idea towards ‘Peace' in Buddhism is related to these words: happiness, calmness, coolness, and neatness which are mindful and have the same meaning as Nibbana, the highest aim in Buddhism to attain the absolute cessation of sorrow; peace can exist in the whole society on condition thatits people’s inner minds are able to reach such peace without being dependent on the outer happiness.
(2) PhraDhammakosajarn (Buddhadassa Bhikku) had the highest ideal in his life according to the Buddha’s teachings that was having his mind attained the blissful state and aimed to disseminate this bliss to mankind while breathing. He had set up three frameworks of determination for Buddhists to follow: 1) to understand the core and perform a self-practice to attain the deepest depth of one’s religion, 2) make good understanding among religions, and 3) help take fellowman to come out of materialism; with these three principles, he used the means of dissemination through the tools of his own practice as a role-model, teaching with easy and short-cut language, writing Dhamma books proficiently, youth training, and creating temple as a peace-building model.
(3) The key role of PhraDhammakosajarn (Buddhadassa Bhikku) to Thai society is that he was the one who planted seeds of peaceful bliss to human fellow who love peace, wish to awaken and would like to see peace arise in society. His role, which has affected the strengthening societyfor peace and bliss, was of: 1) being a researcher/learning from practicing, 2) planting seeds of peace, 3) being peace engineer in creating peaceful temple, 4) being a poet/the ambassador of peace, 5)creating society of Buddhists who realize, awaken and blossom, and 6) being peace engineer who inspires society. All of these caused researcher to find the new knowledge in developing monks as significant social basis in preserving peaceful bliss under the ideal and means called MCU PEACE: M = Model of good conduct meaning monks have to perform themselves as peaceful role-models, C = Co-operation meaning monks can co-operate to build a bridge for peace, U = U & Me meaning monks should teach Buddhists to have the right view and see to the whole world as in the same brotherhood by making themselves to be happy/ P= Peace of mind, persuading people to learn the inner peace/ E = Education, putting effort to build peace through every life activity/ A = Activity, realizing in time and pacifying mind to cool calmness/ C = Conductive), and blend everything with love/ E = Environment.
