Learning Potential Developing of Stateless Children in Nong Lu Sub-District Sangkhla Buri District Kanchanaburi Province

Abstract

 

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed at 1) to study learning potential developing of stateless children in Nong Lu Sub-district Sangkhlaburi District Kanchanaburi Province; 2) to study problems and obstacles of stateless children Nong Lu Sub-district Sangkhlaburi District Kanchanaburi Province; and 3) present guidelines in development of stateless children in Nong Lu Sub-district Sangkhlaburi District Kanchanaburi Province. This present study employed a Mixed Method with both Quantitative, with a survey, and qualitative research methodologies. The study sample consisted of 306 out of 1,302 stateless children aging between 12 – 18 years Nong Lu Sub-district Sangkhlaburi District Kanchanaburi Province. The subjects were recruited based on the sample size of Taro Yamane. The instrument used in data collection was a questionnaire. The data were analyzed in terms of Frequency, Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation. As for qualitative methodology, in-depth interviews were used with key Informants, and data were analyzed by means of content analysis.

The study findings revealed that

1. The overall of stateless children’s opinions toward learning Potential developing of stateless children in Nong Lu Sub-District Sangkhala Buri District Kanchanaburi Province was found in medium level (=3.23). When considering each aspect, it was found that the opinions toward all aspects were at medium levels - human rights, self-reliance, learning, and society/culture.

 

2. As regards problems and obstacles on development of stateless children’s learning Potential in Nong Lu Sub-District Sangkhala Buri District Kanchanaburi Province, it is found that 1) the aspect of learning: the children lack communication between instructors and children, understanding the essence of learning and opportunity for getting education and learning. 2) The aspect of society/culture: they lack promotion in learning the local arts and culture, knowledge and understanding in development of their community and participation in community. 3) The aspect of human rights: they were limited in going outside, furthering education and medical service. 4) The aspect of self-reliance: they lack ability to help themselves in daily life completely, to communicate with others and to retain their health as well.

3. As the guideline on development of stateless children’s learning Potential in Nong Lu Sub-District Sangkhala Buri District Kanchanaburi Province, it was recommended that 1) the aspect of learning: the guideline in promoting teachers’ potential for languages, in adjusting the learning media effectively, and providing opportunity to study including the rights of equal education. 2) The aspect of society/culture: there should be of plans for community project with the leadership of a chief of commune and head of village to promote the local tradition for youths, promotion of life skills to comprehend society, and encouraging families to aware of community development and the children to take part in community activities. 3) The aspect of human rights: there should have determination on the rights to reside and get higher education for the stateless children equally, on preventing sexual abuses/physical and mental violence from influential people in community and on getting medical service equally in society without unfair violation and discrimination. 4) The aspect of self-reliance: there should be of determination on promoting jobs for children to increase their families’ income, on getting medical service: getting sickness the children should get medical service from hospital nearby, and on promoting knowledge and understanding Thai language as it should be.
