Abstract

The thesis entitled “A Comparative Study on Political Philosophy of Thomas Hobbes and Tienwan” consists of 3 objectives as 1) to study the concept of political philosophy, 2) to investigate in political philosophy of Thomas Hobbes and Tienwan and 3) to make a comparative study between Thomas Hobbes’s and Tienwan’s political philosophy.  The results are as follows.

According to the political philosophy, it is not only the valuable knowledge related to political activities and reasonable accuracy that involved  with the righteousness of the political order, but also the stability of society. Moreover, it includes the goal of the political system on the freedom, equality, justice, as well as the aim and the rights of the state power.

Regarding to Hobbes’s political philosophy, the sovereign is considered as the political leader and religion. All human beings are involved with the laws governing motion and collision. However, Tienwan’s political idea is conveyed by the Brahmanism, Buddhism and western political philosophy of separating the human nature, state, law, government, political ideas and forms of government.

When comparing the political idea between Thomas Hobbes and Tienwan, it is found that on the human nature, Thomas Hobbes believed that human beings pursue their own self-interest relentlessly and mechanically, avoiding pain and pursuing pleasure.  Regarding to Tienwan’s political idea of human nature, he believed that humans are different by races, but they have the same equality of freedom and justice. Hobbs explained that a man can do anything other than that prohibited by law. While Tienwan’s ideal upholds that, all men have their right to live in freedom under the moral law and the rule of state. In addition, he has proposed that the state should promote education and security to the people. Hobbes believed that all humans by nature have their jurisdiction over reason, therefore, his form of government was considered as a real modernity. While Tienwan’s political was an appropriate combination of traditional democratic.
