Abstract

The purposes of this research were ;1,to study the history of Dhudanga practice in Hinayana Buddhism ; 2, to study the Dhutanga practice of Venerable Kassapa ; 3 to criticize the Dhutanga-practice of Ven.Kassapa.

              The findings are as follows

The Dhutanga is the additional ways of practices for the Buddhist monks who want to get rid of defilements a very short time. There are 13 Dhutangas in Buddhism;  each of which being able to make the practitioners enlighten the higher dharma in a shorter time. The Buddhist monks are free to choose and follow any one out of 13 or all 13 dhutanga  ;or even any monk who may not follow dhutanga is not against the law of Buddhist monk ; for dhutanga are not the laws or disciplines but only the additional ways  ; making one getting into the higher Dharma in shorter time.

Venerable Mahakasapa paid the most important role in making Buddhism stable and popular in the world till the present day.He adopted and utilized the dhutangas as the important meant of getting rid of all defilements. He was starting from pangsukula (to use the ropes collecing from the heap of dust) From the critically consideration, it can be concluded that the hearty following dhutanggas of Ven.Kassapa is the direct way leading him to the Niravana, because of which he was the idol of the Buddhist Monks who followed and protected the dhutanga-standard till the present day.
