Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to 1) study Pamanika in Buddhism, 2) study the history of monks who were foremost apostles, and 3) study the Pamanika of monks who were foremost in teaching the principles. This research was qualitative research.
The studies were found that the 4-Pamanika refer to people who measure, judge or take standard of the beliefsin four kinds of people. First, Rupa-pamanais one whose faith depends on good appearance,Second, Ghosa-pamana is one who measures by voice or reputation. Third, Lukha-pamana is one whose faith depends on aesthetics and material objects. Fourth, Dhamma-pamana is one whose faith depends on morality and righteousness.
The 4 monks whowere foremost of teaching are: NantaThera, a monk who was foremost of protecting senses, KutatpattatTherawas a monkwho wasforemost of beautiful voice. MokaradThera was a monk who was foremost of wearing robe, and PannunmanTherawas a monk who was foremost of preaching. The 4 thera or monks set their journeydifferently in the past depending on the individual's character and passion of Pamanika
The faith or belief in the Pamanika of the four monkswould be affected both advantageously and disadvantageouslyfor the spreading of Buddhism. The advantage was that it brought people in India to follow Buddhism more and more. The disadvantage results were different according to the Pamanika of Buddhists’ faith excepted for Dhamma-pamana which was the way of true happiness.
