Abstract
This thesis by the means of qualitative-research is of 3 objectives: 1) to study the way of Thai astrologers’ forecasting; 2) to study principle of ‘Sammāvācā’ or ‘Right Speech’ in Theravada Buddhism; and 3) to apply principle of ‘Sammāvācā’ or ‘Right Speech’ for Thai astrologers’ forecasting.
From the research, it is found the following:
1. Forecasting is a prediction of influences on the movement of stars, the sun and the moon which affect humans’ fate; it aims to explain fate of people, politics, medicine, nature, finance, and to advise auspicious occasions, which mostly related to luck, life, spouse and profession, whereas, forecasting features are analogy and estimation; and its methods are warm welcoming, keeping secret, having good manners, not using vulgar language, being cautious, not having prejudice or stepping over failure, and not boasting.
2. Sammāvācā’ or ‘Right Speech’ is the words with precept principle good for hearing that lead away from sorrow; it comprises of 5 factors of not telling lies, not instigating, not speaking impolite and drivel words, all of which is under the principle of the right time, the true and polite as well as sweet words with usefulness and loving kindness. Plus, the means of using the Right Speech can be done in features of conversation, describing, rule setting and answering questions. The ‘Right Speech’ is a tool to create advantages leading to changes of knowledge, attitude and behavior.
3. Results of Thai astrologers’ forecasting under the application of the Right Speech is found the following: 1) It is in line with the right time and place, meaning the suitability for situation, people, time and place. 2) It is in the basis of truth, meaning the truth according to theoretical Scripture and being harmonized with the law of Karma or the principle of cause and effect. 3) It is beautifully sweet, meaning the forecast with polite language, not discouraging, and with advice to offer Dana, observe precepts and meditate. 4) It is for enhancing peaceful benefit, meaning speaking for customers’ benefit in preparing both their bodies and minds for future incidents. 5) It is with loving kindness, meaning well-wish speaking for the listeners to be out of sorrow, being happy and beneficially successful.
In conclusion, if astrologers attach to the principle of the Right Speech for their forecasting, it will help enhance society’s peace; simultaneously, the role of astrologers will be trustworthy to the society.
