An Analytical Study of the Values of Buddhist Principles Appeared in Mahāvessantarajātaka

Abstract

The research objectives were as follow: 1) to study the history and the essential of Mahāvessantarajātaka 2) to study the Buddhist principle appeared in Mahāvessantarajātaka 3) to analyze values of Buddhist principle appeared in Mahāvessantarajātaka. This research is a documentary research. The researcher was studying related documents and research works and analyzed the data according to the research objectives, then, the data were analyzed according to the research objectives.

The results were found as follow:

Mahāvessantarajātaka is considered to be the well-known as Buddhist literature. Sometimes, that is called Māhājātākā, the story of Bodhisāttvā when he was born as Phrāvessāndorn, the latest of jātakas from 547. Phrāvessāndorn Bodhisāttvā is last in 10 jātaka. There were 13 parts of  Mahāvessantarajātaka as follow 1) Dāsāporn 2) Himmāpānā 3) Dānā 4) Wānāpāved 5) Jūjākā 6) Julāpālā 7) Māhāpālā 8) Kumāra  9) Mataree 10) Sakkābap11) Mahārāja  12) chakasata 13) Nakara

Buddhist principles appeared in Mahāvessantarajātaka  were consisted of  Karmma principle, Heedlessness principle, Dāna principle, Gharāvāsa-Dhamma principle, Adhipateyya principle, Brahmavihāra principle, Six Disas principle, Sanghavatthu principle, Santosa principle, Mitta principle, PancaSīla principle, Kālāmāsūtta principle, Musāvāda principle, Kataññūkataveditā principle, Kosalla principle, Adihitthānnadhamma principle, Akusalamūla principle, Bhojanemattannutā principle, Sārānīyadhamma principle

In the Buddhist principles values appeared in Mahāvessantarajātaka; the researcher found that there were 4 values: physical values, psychological values, social values and Traditional and Cultural values. The first value was physical values, it can help us not to be careless in life, it help us to separate the good things from the bad things, appreciate the physical value and take care of ourselves as well as use ourselves to do the good things. The second value was psychological values, the doctrines appeared in Mahāvessantarajātaka can develop mind to be generous and kind, not to be jealous and increase the understanding of the truth. The third value was social values, the Buddhist principles appeared in Mahāvessantarajātaka can help us to live in society peacefully. Everybody does their duties, not to make trouble. When someone does wrong thing, everybody can forgive to each other. The society was vigorous. The problems of family will be decreased. The last value was traditional and cultural values, most Thai cultures and traditions had related with Buddhism by order to having Buddhist principles to put their faith by Buddhist ceremonies. Therefore, there are many Buddhist traditions and culture nowadays.
