Abstract

The aims of this research were: 1) to study the background of the ceremony ‘Su-khwan’ in the wedding ceremony in Thai society; 2) to study the morale from such wedding ceremony of Chaiyaphum people; 3) to present the ethical values from morale in the words of marriage in the wedding ceremonies of Chaiyaphum province. The results of this qualitative research were as follows:

The ceremony ‘Su-khwan’ of I-san and Chaiyaphum people has existed since the time of their ancestors. The chanting of the words of marriage called ‘Su-khwan’ is the worship of the sacred spirits based on the belief of Brahmanism that spread and had its long term influence in Thai society and I-san people. This caused I-san people to conduct the ‘Bai-si-su-khwan’ ceremony as the way of the sacred spirit worship. The words of this worship are the chant to the sacred spirit to be the witness and the protectors of the wedding couple to have prosperity, encouragement and convince in their couple life. It is believed that both and their relative are blessed accordingly.

The words of ‘Su-khwan’ is composed by the local northeastern melodies for the local philosophers with their knowledge and local wisdom in terms of language and literatures. The moral teachings have been inserted in a rhyme style, easy to remember as the morale and philosophy of household living which raises the ethical approach to practice of newlyweds. This leads to creating the values of practices between husband and wife, wife and husband, their living, son-in-law and father and mother in law, daughter in law and father-mother in law, husband and wife and their relatives and community and society. In terms of cultural preservation, this ceremony, this prolongs the practice of their ancestors which is almost neglected in I-san because  of the arrival of the western cultures in Chaiyaphum province.
