Abstract

The thesis entitled “A Comparative Study of the Peaceful Life of the Buddhists and Muslims in Talad Nongchok Community, Bangkok” has three objectives:  1) to study the Peaceful Life of the Buddhists in Talad Nongchok Community, Bangkok 2) to study the Peaceful Life of the Muslims in Talad Nongchok Community, Bangkok and 3) to comparatively study the Peaceful Life of the Buddhists and Muslims in Talad Nongchok Community, Bangkok. This study is of qualitative research. The sources of this study have been collected from documents and research papers related to this study, and also from In-depth Interview.

The results of the study were as follows:

The peaceful life in the light of the Buddhist is the living or the living life happily without conflicts and violence, and having justice and various ways that would make peace and happiness reasonably, and, in addition to knowing right and duties of themselves, following the 6 Directions, promoting individuals and society to have dhamma, i.e., the righteousness, regarding the right thing as the main and importance principle for practice or carrying out all activities, such as economics, politics, society, governance, religion, education and ecology, once all of these have been simultaneously promoted to both individual and society, peace and happiness would occur to the world surely.

The peaceful life in Islam will take place with the training and teaching on the ways of Islam continuously by following 4 factors, namely, 1) individual happiness, that is to say, giving respect to Allah only, and being able to follow the way of Islam perfectly, 2) family happiness--by promoting the rule of behavior and various rules, 3 social happiness by following: i) loving and kindness, ii) collaboration and unification, iii) equality) vi) justice, and v) good social welfare; and  4) world happiness—the happiness of the world resulting from individual, family and social happiness.

From the comparison of peaceful life of the Buddhists and Muslims in Talad Nongchok Community, Bangkok, it was found that the Buddhist and Muslims have the similar view that the living peaceful life together in society would occur once they have to have firm belief and follow the teachings of religion strictly, thereby they would be able to develop their body, word, and mind to be peaceful and happy. But the different view of them was that the Buddhists aim at following five precepts (pañca-sīla) for the development of their body and word to be peaceful and happy, and finally, reaching to the sustainable peace and happiness, that is to say, nibbāna. But the Muslims aim at following belief in Allah, having Allah as the way-giver for living life that would bring peace and happiness perpetually.
