Abstract

The objectives of this dissertation were: (1) to study practicing the contemplation on a body in Mahasatipatthana Sutta and (2) to analyze practicing the contemplation on a body in Mahasatipatthana Sutta. This was a qualitative research to collect all data from Tipitaka, Buddhist academic paper and related researches with the descriptive analysis.

A result of this study was found that the contemplation on a body in Mahasatipatthana Sutta was the practice relating to morality, mindfulness and concentration in order to know things as they really were. A study started from practicing the contemplation on a body in Mahasatipatthana in a way that one got  continuous mindfulness to see arising, existing and disappearing in a body and mind. This was powerful mindfulness to destroy continuity of manner called 'Santati'. That one saw rising and falling in a body and mind wanted great effort and powerful faculties. Practice of insight meditation in Buddhism dealt with Right Mindfulness, i.e. the use of mindfulness and wisdom to consider continuously four bases: Kayanupassana-satipatthana (mindfulness contemplating on a body), Vedananupassana-satipatthana (mindfulness  contemplating on feelings), Cittanupassana-satipatthana (mindfulness contemplating on mind), and Dhammanupassana-satipatthana (mindfulness contemplating on mental objects.

When there was the analysis of the contemplation on a body in Mahasatipatthana Sutta, it was found that development of mindfulness in all manners gave rise to concentration and wisdom to understand rising and falling in a body and mind. If the contemplation on breathing in and breathing out was continuously done, it made mind elaborate, delighted, happy, peaceful and free from all bad action.
