Abstract

This thesis entitled ‘The Approaches of Development of Pariyattidhamma School: A Case Study of Wat Awutvikasitaram’ has three objectives: 1) to study the management of Thai Sangha’s Pariyattidhamma, 2) to study the problems of the management of teaching and learning on Pariyattidhamma School, Dharma-Pãli Department, Wat Awutvikasitaram, and 3) to study the development guidelines of Pariyattidhamma School, Dhamma-Pãli Department: a case study of Wat Awutvikasitaram through using a qualitative research method which has studied from documents, interviews and focus group.

The results of the study showed that the educational management of the Sangha in the early Rattanakosin period was like the Ayutthaya period, i.e. the Tipiµaka was divided into three classes, namely, Barian Tri to Barian Ek. The class was defined into levels; from the 1st level to 9th, where the commentaries are the main curriculum. At the reign of King Rama the VI, it was changed from oral examination to a written examination. In addition, the education management in Dhamma section was also added. At present, the new evaluation system is changed, i.e., passing the examination in some subjects in the level of 1-2 to 5th level can be re-examined for failing subjects within that year.

In this research, problems of teaching and learning management mechanisms and development guidelines for the Office of Buddhist Studies Dhamma-Pãli Department: A Case Study of Wat Awutvikasitaram, were found as follows:

In human resource management, it was found that the board had insufficient policy management to solve various obstacles. Therefore, the policy should be continuously monitored and taken closer than the past at present. The teaching sector cannot be replaced by the existing teaching staffs. It is necessary to continuously and systematically produce professional teachers. In student side, there are no enough students to continue study following the curriculum and lack of systematic development. The school network should set up and develop the methods for qualified students.

In the academic administration, it was found that the board lacked a continuous and close monitoring process for the school policy. Therefore, there should be a continuous monitoring of the school administration policy in order to be aware of the obstacles and solve problems in a timely manner. The teachers lack expertise and teaching techniques, and, therefore, they should have the additional supervision by qualified professionals to increase their expertise and techniques. On the student side, lack of enthusiasm and motivation to study were found, therefore, activities that inspire learning motivation from continuing experts should be provided.

Regarding budget management, it was found that the lack of budget management run by other methods that had been done in the past was found, therefore, it should be managed by other means such as annual budget allocation for flexibility in management. In addition, there is a lack of finding other source of budgets from the current ones, so there should be additional stable funds.

In general administration, it was found that the School lacked clarity in creating policy incentives, so in order to motivate students, the criteria for awarding should be given since the beginning of the academic year. In addition, the rules and regulations of the education institutions on certain topics are not consistent with the current situation. Therefore, various regulations should be updated to be consistent with the current situation and practical use in the real practice.
