The Reinforcement of Self-Actualization in Theravada Buddhism

Abstract

This qualitative research is of three objectives, namely:- 1) to study the human value in Theravada Buddhist scriptures, 2) to study the principles of human value in Theravada Buddhism, and  3) to study the practices in the reinforcement of Self-Actualization in Theravada Buddhism.

The findings revealed that, according to Theravada Buddhist scriptures, human value means the value of being born as a human and the value of living as a human. Therefore we should live without being careless by doing the good things, the ability of maintaining the value of goodness of oneself, the ability to completely observe the precepts, and the ability to improve self-potential to the state of enlightenment. Therefore, a human being should live without careless and see the value in oneself. The Buddhist principles of human value define the right view   (sammādiṭṭhi) consisting of both mundane and super mundane right view, the principle of threefold wisdom, namely:- 1) wisdom obtained by listening, 2) wisdom obtained by thinking, and 3) wisdom obtained by training. In addition, the aims for reinforcement of self-actualization values in dimension of time (attha), together with mundane and super mundane, since all human beings need to see their value in life for their benefits in their present and next life. They lead to the practices for the Reinforcement of Self-Actualization consist of:- 1) analyzing oneself  by the six temperament (carita), 2) understanding the internal voice which is “yonisomanasikāra” and external voice which is paratoghosa” and “kalayāṇamittatā”, 3) applying the concept of psychological positive thinking from the western world with tranquil meditation as right concentration (sammāsamādhi), and 4) developing oneself according to the Threefold Training
