Abstract

The research entitled A Study on Health Care by Navaharaguna of Somdej Phra Ariyavaṁsañāṇa Somdej Phra Saṁgharāja (Suk Ñāṇasaṁvaro)” has three objectives: 1) to study the characteristics of Navaharaguna in Theravada Buddhism, 2) to study the principles of Navaharaguna of Somdej Phra Ariyavaṁsañāṇa Somdej Phra Saṁgharāja (Suk Ñāṇasaṁvaro) and 3) to study health care using Navaharaguna of Somdej Phra Ariyavaṁsañāṇa Somdej Phra Saṁgharāja (Suk Ñāṇasaṁvaro). This research is a qualitative research consisting of documentary research and field research by in-depth interviews and collecting data from the interview form.

The results of the research showed that the nine virtues of Buddha are the specific features of the Arahanta, who becomes the Buddha only. These virtues comprise of nine Pali chapters namely: “Arahaṃ Samā-Saṃbudd Vijjā-carana-saṃpanno Sugato Lokavidū Anuttaro Purisa-dhaṃma-sārathi Satthā Deva-manussānaṃ Buddhō Bhagavā”. These virtues of Buddha are also known as Navārahāthiguna, or Navārahaguna, or Navarahaguna. According to the long time together with most people have not the knowledge of Pali grammar, this word becomes Navaharaguna and has been popular word. In the ancient traditional medicine scriptures, Navaharaguna has been mostly called “the nine rooms of Itipiso” or “the heart spells of Itipiso”. These spells were used together with the medicine namely “Kaew Navaharaguna” and Navaharaguna also used together with ancient traditional massage. In the part of the superstitious ritual which is part of the ancient medicine, Navaharaguna is also used in writing the talisman, Takrud and the talisman cloth. In the determining of mind for healing according to the methods of Somdej Phra Ariyavaṁsañāṇa Somdej Phra Saṁgharāja (Suk Ñāṇasaṁvaro), he used Navaharaguna as a Buddhist way of treating the health care together with the knowledge of the elements (Dhātu) and traditional medicine, especially massage and scripture schemes about the body's internal meridian. The result after training Navaharaguna to the volunteers was found that all volunteers can bring Navaharaguna to treat themselves both in term of balancing the Dhātu and treating of health care. In the treating of health care, the use of mindfulness together with Navaharaguna can reduce the adverse reactions of insomnia, stress, migraine headache and abdominal disorder such as reflux and stomach discomfort. Moreover, Navaharaguna can be used to treat the mind, by making the mind calm, elaborate and be able to lift the mind into Vipassana condition. In the view of ancient massage, it was found that there is a possibility of using traditional massage plans with Navaharaguna of Somdej Phra Ariyavaṁsañāṇa Somdej Phra Saṁgharāja (Suk Ñāṇasaṁvaro). A massage doctor who train Navaharaguna must has Precepts and Brahma Vihara Dhamma. After training Navaharaguna, the massage doctor will understand in psychic transmission through the hands that massage to the patients at various points and will make the patient recover from the adverse reactions without medication.
