Abstract

The thesis entitled “Roles of Buddhist monks in conserving local arts and cultures in Wat Phra That Ruengrong, Muang district, Srisaket province” consisted of three objectives. The study aimed: 1) to study the background of conserving local arts and cultures in Wat Phra That Ruengrong, Muang district, Srisaket province, 2) to study the conditions of conserving local arts and cultures since from the past until nowadays in Wat Phra That Ruengrong, and 3) to study problems and to present guidelines for promoting the roles of Buddhist monks in conserving local arts and cultures in Wat Phra That Ruengrong, Muang district, Srisaket province. This is a qualitative research that was created through the in-depth interview with the sample of 15 persons.

             The results of research were as follows:

             1) The museum in Wat Phra That Ruangrong was established by the Venerable Phra Khru Wibul Thammapan due to the effect of globalization that had destroyed the old style’s way of lives and cultures. So, the museum was built to be the center for learning the 4 tribes of Srisaket’s way of live and history, and to conserve their local arts and cultures.

             2)  From the study of the conditions of conserving local arts and cultures, it was found that since from the past until nowadays, it had the characteristics of centralization with Venerable Phra Khru Wibul Thammapan as the head who played an important role in the management and decision making.

             3) From the study of problems in promoting the roles of Buddhist monks in conserving local arts and cultures in Wat Phra That Ruengrong, it was found that there were three problems which were 1) conservation, 2) propagation and restoration, and 3) personnel and management. It was also found that there were six aspects for the guidelines for promoting the roles of Buddhist monks in conserving local arts and cultures in Wat Phra That Ruengrong, namely; 1) the role in leadership and inheritor, 2) the role in enhancing the support collaboration, 3) the role in enhancing the collective management, 4) the role in propagating and restoring, 5) the role in strengthening the local scholars to share knowledge in the community, and 6) the role in building a local museum network.
