The Kaṅkhavitaranī-abhinavaṭīkā : A Translation and an Analytical Study

Abstract

This dissertation has three objectives, 1) to translate the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī-abhinavaṭīkā from Pāli into Thai language, 2) to study of the history, the structure, the language, and the values of the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī-abhinavaṭīkā, and 3) to analyze the contents of the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī-abhinavaṭīkā and the relationship of it to Tipiṭaka, Aṭṭhakathā, Ṭikā, and other texts. This is the qualitative research which emphasize documentary study.

            It found that the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī-Abhinavaṭīkā in Thai version contained 339 pages, it was written by Venerable Buddhanāga Thera at the Anurādhapura city, Sri Lanka in the period of the First King Prakkamabāhu during 1696 – 1729 B.E. The content was comprised by Bhikkhu Pāṭimokkha and Bhikkhuṇī Pāṭimokkha, the forms were composed by proses, poems, or verses. Its outstanding characteristic is an explanation very clearly and deeply. It explained the words, the meanings, and the contents of matters of Vinaya respectively. The simile explanation was used to understand clearly, it was the valuable text to Buddhism, literature, life, and society. The important contents are Pāṭimokkha, Uposatha, Ovādapāṭimokkha in Nidāna-vaṇṇanā and disciplinary rules in Bhikkhu Pāṭimokkha-vaṇṇanā and Bhikkhuṇī Pāṭimokkha-vaṇṇanā. There are three aspects of relationship with Tipiṭaka, Aṭṭhakathā, Ṭikā, and other texts; 1) the content structure, 2) the content explanation, and 3) the literature.
