Abstract

This dissertation entitled “A Development of the Progress Evaluation Form in Eradicating the Fetters for Insight Meditation Practitioners has three objectives: 1) to study the fetters in Buddhist scriptures, 2) to study the insight meditation by satipaṭṭhana 4 to eradicate the fetters in Buddhist scriptures, and 3) to develop the forms to evaluate the progression in eradicating the fetters through the practitioners’ insight meditation. This is a qualitative research made by documentary studying in eradicating the fetters in Theravada Buddhist scriptures such as Tipitaka, and in-depth interviews of 7 satipaṭṭhana 4 meditation masters through the rising and the falling recitation in order to develop the forms to evaluate the eradication of the fetters at the beginning level. The findings are as follows: 1) According to Buddhism, the word ‘fetter’ basically means defilements binding the beings in the process of the birth and death because of the self-concept clinging which made the person not truly known the suffering and the cessation of the sufferings. 2) The insight meditation by practicing satipaṭṭhana 4 is the middle-way to meet the knowledge (magga), the fruition (phala-ñana) and nirvana. By practicing the them, the practitioners are full of mindfulness and awareness that lead to the knowledge (ñana) to insight the aggregates as they are (right view) under the three characteristics: impermanence, suffering, and not-self. However, The fetters eradication by practicing the satipaṭṭhana 4 is self-knowledge, no-one can know of another. The evaluator who can evaluate the practitioners must have the same virtue or higher. 3) In presenting the progress evaluation form in eradication the fetters for insight meditation practitioners, the form is a kind of interview made by document as a self-evaluation form for practitioners. The form is not aimed to evaluate the 16 knowledge (ñana) which are practitioners met. The forms developed have three parts: 1) evaluating the progression of the insight meditation practitioners through the satipaṭṭhana 4 practicing through the rising and the falling recitation is based on the principle and method of the interview, and the meditation masters’ interviewees, 2) evaluating the practitioners’ effort based on the sammappadhãna 4, and 3) evaluating conduct that show the reduction of self-concept or self (sakkãyadiṭṭhi), uncertainty in the triple gem, method and the benefits of insight meditation (vicikicchã), and wrong view that is not the way to the noble eightfold path (silabbataparãmãsa), by assessing the action and speech of the practitioners which change to be the good conduct (kusala), on the other hand, the mind should be made by self-evaluation except  by the same level or higher virtue of evaluators.
