Abstract

The study entitled “A Study of Wellbeing Promotion from for the Elderly according to Buddhism: A Case of Wat Hua Fai, Sanklang Sub-District, Phan District, Chiang Rai.” aimed to study  the concept  on the model of promoting the health of the elderly people  according to Buddhism  of Wat Huafai, Sanklang Subdistrict ,Pan District , Chiangrai   and  to propose ways to promote the health of the seniors according to Buddhism. This is a documentary and qualitative research. The five main population groups involved in the study were 25 participants consisting of 5 Buddhist monks, 5 members of Sanklang Subdistrict Administrative Organization, 5 community leaders, 5 local learned men, and 5 elderly people.

Researchers surveyed and collected data by in-depth interview and focus group. The data analysis and conclusion were done by taking documents and interview into the analysis, then, findings were systematized and presented in descriptive and descriptive form together with suggestions.

Findings were as follows:

1) Senior’s Health Promotion: Promotion of elderly’s health is the promotion on complete physical, social, emotional and intellectual wellbeing. Physical health is a physical development and the development of the body to contact with the physical environment in a way that is beneficial, not to be blamed, by knowing how to consume four requisites at the highest value. Elderly social wellbeing is the ability to live with others, viz.: family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. This shows that social support is important to help the body to recover from ailments faster. Emotional wellbeing is the mental state of the person resulting from the factors that cause stress in a person's life and how they react to it including the ability and opportunity to spend personal time for fun and relaxation. The intellectual wellness is true faith, life, and world understanding as they really are and they can live in the reality of the world and of life in a normal way.

2) Forms and barriers in promoting the well-being of the elderly in accordance with Buddhism: Health promotion form for the elderly of Wat  Huafai has carried out health promotion for the elderly through the elderly school by organizing learning activities and leisure activities to promote the health of the seniors in terms of physical wellbeing, emotional wellbeing, social welfare, and intellectual wellbeing.

3) Way to the seniors’ health promotion: Guidelines for promoting the well-being of the elderly can be carried out by arranging activities / projects related to mainly Buddhist activities to be a refuge the participants to follow the Buddhist beliefs including the implementation of local heritage as a mechanism to drive for being consistent with the beliefs and lifestyle of the community, such as  the elderly school project of  Wat Huafai, Kwuang Wat (temple premises), Kwuang phaya ( Premises of wisdom), Kwuang  chumchon ( Premise of community), and Sanklang in Buddhist way. These activities were carried out based on temple as the center for activities to develop and enhance the well-being of the elderly including local culture, activities such as Dhamma training programs for lay devotees and  public, activities on important Buddhist days, prayer on welcoming new year, an arrangement of  Kwuang Wat (temple premises), Kwuang phaya (Premises of wisdom), Kwuang  chumchon (Premise of community) through local wisdom including  Lanna language study, herbal medicinal textbook, cooking and eating indigenous food, handicrafts, etc. Thus, all activities are a guideline to promote the health of the elderly in 4 dimensions.
