The Belief and Rituals for the Votive Offering of Laungpho Phrasai in Wat Phochai, Maung District, Nongkhai Province

Abstract

The purposes of this thesis were; 1) to study the beliefs in Buddhism 2) to study the rituals for the votive offering of Laungpho Phrasai, Wat Phochai in Maung District, Nongkhai Province and 3) to analyze the belief and rituals for Luangpho Phrasai in Wat Phochai, Muang District, Nongkhai Province. This research is the qualitative research by collecting the data from Buddhist scriptures, related documents, researches and to report the results of research by using the descriptive analysis.

                 The results of the research were found that in the aspect of belief in Buddhism, it is found that to intend to study the principle of faith consisting of reasonability, contemplation with wisdom in accordance with the principle of Buddhist teachings in compliance with 4 principles, that is, Kamma-Saddha: belief in the law of Kamma, Vipaka-saddha: belief in the consequence of Kamma, Kammasassakata-saddha: belief in the individual ownership of Kamma and Tatagatabpodhi-saddha: belief in the enlightenment of the Buddha. All these are the beliefs consisting of the reasonability and contemplation with the wisdom certainly.

                 The rituals of votive offering are the ritual performance leading to the successfulness in accordance with requirement and leading to the results as required that human beings act on the belief that is the association with the daily life in order to request for the blessings or to perform the rituals concerning the votive offerings towards the sacred things that are regarded as one worship in order to create the miracle and originate to raise up the good thing in accordance with the requirement. When individual receives his successfulness and then he perform the rituals to solve the votive offering that he has done. That action depends on each person because it may be different from each other in accordance with the belief of each person.

                 The belief of people that depends on the Tiple Gems as the foundation is the belief with faith and contemplation with the wisdom consisting of the belief in the law of Kamma. That action is based on the volition. The action that is done by us in the past or the present will receive that result. For the belief in rebirth, every human must face the rebirth in accordance with their results of Kamma. For the belief in the law of nature, everything, not only man or creature will be based on the corporeality and mentality that are impermanence of the nature and for the belief in hell and heaven, in doing good, receiving good, everybody will receive the result of action as he had done.

                 For the rituals for the votive offerings of Laungpho Phrasai in Wat Phochai, people who receive the blessings from the votive rituals will go to fulfill their vow as they vowed with Laungpho Phrasai in Wat Phochai in accordance with their own words as they said, people will have the different rituals, that is, to fulfill their vow with the offerings, ordination and entertainment including the votive offerings that they might forget and some come up to fulfill their vow in the day of worship and water-pouring on Laungpho Phrasai in Nongkhai Province during the time of 13-17 April in every year.

                 The belief and rituals for the votive offerings of people towards Laungpho Phrasai In Wat Phochai produce the auspiciousness to life, family, work and lifestyle of each person because they believe in Laungpho Phrasai by worship- practice, and donation of requisites and their actions reflect the results on people in Nongkhai Province.
