Abstract

The thesis has  three  objectives: 1) To study the concept of fire in Science. 2) To study the concept of fire in Theravada Buddhism. 3) To study the application of fire definition involving animate and intangible Fire in Theravada Buddhism.

The results of the thesis are us follows.

                1) The concept  of fire in science  is defined as one reaction performed by adding oxygen in a substance to create heat, light, and changing conditions. There are 3 components of fire : fuel, air, heat. There are 2 characteristics of quality : physical quality and chemical quality. Fire has enormous usefulness to human in leading life, coking, making business and health.

2) The concept  of fire in Theravada Buddhism is defined in 2 ways. One is fire inside animates, another is intangible fire. The latter is used to make comparison with principles of  teaching  Dhamma  in  Buddhism.

                3) Fire concept according to Theravada Buddhism explanation involving the one inside animates is applied as one component that originates in the 26 states of Existence. The intangible fire is applied as the main component of principles used as a tool to clarify the Dhamma teaching in 2 folds : one is compared with evil deeds that must be completely destroyed from the body and mind,  another is compared to the good deeds that must be practiced. The good deeds are 3 types of fire : Fire that should be respected (parents), Fire that should be worshiped (ascetics), and Fire that should be protected (spouses’ children  and  dependents).
