EFFICIENCY OF SANGHA ADMINISTRATION: A CASE STUDY OF TEMPLES AT NONGSANG DISTRICT, SARABURI PROVINCE 2010

Abstract

The main objectives of this research are: i) to determine the efficacy of Sangha Administration; ii) to compare the opinions towards the efficiency of Sangha Administration; and iii) to study the guidelines and suggestions for improving the Sangha Administration : A Case Study of Temples in Nongsang District, Saraburi Province. The sample used in this study were 187 Buddhist Monks, novices, temple warden and board Committee members, being drawn by cluster sampling technique. The tool used in data collection was questionnaire measuring the effectiveness of the Sangha Administration : A case study of the temple in Nongsang District, Saraburi Province,  with reliability value = 0.974. The data analysis was computed by using statistical techniques such as the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, T-test and analysis ANOVA (One way analysis of variance), and to compare the differences of paired means, the Least Significant Difference (LSD) was employed.

The findings of the study were concluded as follows                               1. The overall efficiency of Sangha administration in Nongsang District, Saraburi Province, was found at the high level ( X = 3.59). When having considered into each aspect, it was also noticed at the high levels in all aspects.

               2. To compare the opinions of monks, novice and people towards efficiency of Sangha Administration : A case study of temple in Nongsang District, Saraburi Province, it was noted that status, age, years of ordination, position, levels of Dhamma studies and general education, gender, marital status, occupation and skills and life experiences in performance found no significant differences even at 0.05 level, thus, rejecting the hypotheses.

               3. Regarding the problems and suggestions, Problems and obstacles: The Sangha had no budget for development in many areas, especially on education matters, lack of chanting and regular basis monastic daily routine, the work is not clear and decisive, communication is not clear, trudge to work often with no development of new things.  Conflicts between home and temple, failure to respect each other’s, little need to treat adults, problem of drug and other causes of ruins which are major problems of Sangha to be solved urgently.

              Suggestions: To allocate the limited budget to be most useful by focusing primarily on the development of Sangha such as Dhamma education, Pali education, reparation and promotion of things beneficial for Sangha. The monthly Buddhist disciplinary code (Pàñimokkha) had to be observed not only in Buddhist Lent period but also throughout the year by every temple. To resolve the conflict between Sangha and home, training to provide knowledge to respect each other, to developed innovations for the benefits of groups, and find a way to prevent drug abuses, and help monitoring thoroughly.
