An Analytical study of the Doctrinal Principle From Answering the Deities’ Questions by the Buddha 2010

Abstract

This research work tends to have 3 purposes as follows: (1) To study the concept on celestial The deities, (2) To study the answers of Buddha in response to the questions of celestial The deities, (3) To analyze the Dharma Principle derived from Buddha’s answers in response to the questions of celestial The deities by studying the Teachings which have appeared in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures.

                        From The study it is found that the scriptures in the these Baskets mention the view points and the teaching regarding the deities as appearing in the Vinaya, the Sutta and the Abhidhamma. Especially in the Suttas many deities are mentioned and the story of the deities was collected in Devatãsayutta. In Buddhism it is accepted that these are the deities in reality. All the deities have fine complexion with specially physical properties of the celestial bodies with beautiful halo and long lives. They are the population of the heaven with the preference of five finds sensual pleasure, enjoyment and special state of serene contemplation attained by meditation and supernatural powers. Heavenly beings are coming from human beings who behaved upright conduct with blissful states of existence as the stake at the end. Buddhism give the human beings into heavenly beings by practicing the three and ten items of meritorious action, five principles of fulfillment, 7 Vattapadas and the principles of divine virtue. These principles of practice are greatly beneficial and supportive to the practitioners as they would help them to enhance the will power, their future hopes and could have made the practitioners to lead their lives with care and the blissful states of existence in the future.

                        Lord Buddha contacted the heavenly beings regularly with goodwill and friendly relationship. On some occasions, the heavenly beings came down from their abodes to see Lord Buddha at his living place and in turn Lord Buddha went to visit them in the world of gods to give them the sermons. The heavenly being had chances to hear the sermons and whenever they had questions, they would come down to the earth to ask Lord Buddha some questions and how to solve the problems. Tripitaka scripture there were 67 discourses and one subject among questions being asked and answered between heavenly beings and Lord Buddha.

                        Dharma Principle derived from questions and answers between celestial The deities and Buddha can be concluded as follows :

                        Dharma Principle to respond to the desires to know of the celestial The deities are such as; Mai Pak which is a non-searching for sensual happiness that is classified in the Doctrine on Kamsukhallikanuyoga (Sensual Indulgence) and Mai Pien which is a non-searching for happiness by way of self-torture that is classified in the Doctrine on Attakilamathanuyoga (Self-Mortification). These 2 Dharma Principles appear in Oghatara Sutra [the Four Floods which are Kama (Sensuality), Bhava (State of Existence, Ditthi (Misbelief) and Avijja (Ignorance)].

                        Dharma Principle for self-development: such as; Bojjhaja (Constituents of Factors of Enlightenment), Tapa (Mental devotion in acetic practice to get rid of defilements, Indriyasamvara (Sense-Restraints) and Sabbhanissaggha (Total Denunciations). These 4 Dharma Principles appear in Subrahma Sutra. People in general can apply such Dharma Principles in practicing on self-development which will make them lead their lives in a blissful manner even at the present time.

                        Dharma Principle for social development: such as; Atthacariya (Useful conduct or behavior including doing things for public interests), leading one’s life within Dharma (the Teachings of Buddha) and Sila (Rules of Morality which include good physical and verbal conduct). These 3 Dharma Principles appear in Vanaropa Sutra which can be classified as the Principle of Practice that the people in general can apply for use in various aspects of the developments: such as; doing things for the public interests by jointly making the environment in order and pleasant to live in.

                        The Dharma for developing towards the state of freeing oneself from suffering in which the Buddha used in answering the questions of the celestial The deities that appear in may Sutra: such as; Manggala Sutra which consists of Dharma Principle of 38 Blessings: such as: Refrain from associating with the rowdy and having the most blissful mind, etc. The Buddha made His Conclusion in the last part of the Sutra that celestial The deities and human The deities doing good things aforementioned will not be defeated by all enemies, but instead, will be met with happiness in all places.

                        The Buddha’s answers in response to questions of the celestial beings have been indeed immensely beneficial to all celestial The deities and mankind.
