Abstract

This thesis aims to study the Buddhist mural painting in the Thai societies, to study the mural painting in Uposatha Hall at Wat Thogtammachatiwaraihara and to analyze the Buddha dhammas found on the mural painting in Uposatha Hall at Wat Thogtammachatiwaraihara.

For the research, it is found that the Buddhist mural painting in the Thai societies is the art of color painting on wall inside the Uposatha Hall. The mural painting is about Buddhism, Buddha biography, jataka, history, culture and traditions arising from believing Buddhism. The mural painting causes the people to have the opportunity to learn the story of the painting wall. To see the beautiful mural painting will cause the people to have attention in detail. Such painting is of the Buddha’s dhamma. When the people know the dhamma, they will not be attached the beauty of the image only. So, the mural painting is a Buddhist art and a sustainable true religion.

The mural painting in Uposatha Hall at Wat Thogtammachatiwaraihara is a Thai tradition of painting that was written in the reign 3 of  Rattanakosindra period and maintains a plan drawing of the late Auatthaya period. The wall at the back of the Buddha Image, there is the painting of the Three Planes of Existence. The wall in the front part, there is a painting of the Evil One. On the upper side, there are three rows of the deities and at the higher portion, there are the pictures of the hermits. On both sides, there is the Buddha’s biography. On the left side, there is the picture of the Buddha before His enlightenment. On the right side, there is a Buddha’s picture of His enlightenment and His spreading Buddhism up to passing away and 218 years after that, there was again an incident which was against the Buddha’s spreading Buddhism. The arrangement of the pictures is consistent association with the Buddha Image in the characteristic of the symbols as that the Buddha decided to turn His back to happiness of the world and the heaven by His real attention to search for the way to be free from suffering. When the deities in the heaven know about the Buddha’s enlightenment, they came down to human world to express their delight to Buddha.

From the study of the mural painting in Uposatha Hall at Wat Thogtammachati waraihara, it is found that each painting is of the Doctrinal principles in carrying out the lives according the true in the world, the human righteousness and goodness which one can find from looking at the said painting. Thus the Buddhist Doctrine appearing in the said paintings will lead the practitioners to the clean, clear and bright lives. Such the principle of intelligence from the painting of Buddha’s encountering with reality outside his palace, the extinguishing of the defilements from the Mara subduing painting reflect the triumphs over the desire, and the principle of non careless from the painting of the Buddha’s death. The people can not understand the story of the painting wall because they do not have experience about Thai antique painting.    It is necessary to guide about the characteristic of Thai tradition painting before seeing the mural painting. So, the aims of drawing the mural painting is to enable the people to study Buddhism not to be a beauty wall decoration only.
