This thesis aims study the concept about the healthcare healing environment according to Theravāda Buddhist Principles by studying and collecting the information from The Tripitaka and some of the present Buddhist literatures including some related modern documentaries so as to propose the guideline of setting up the place of healthcare unit (in concrete) and what impacts human beings’ mind (in abstract) with three objectives, namely:
1. To study the environment and the healthcare unit nowadays.
2. To study the concept of the environmental and the healthcare unit according to Theravāda Buddhist principles.
3. To propose a guideline of setting up a healthcare healing environment according to Theravāda Buddhist principles.
From the study, it is found that the Pāli term of “environment” did not appear in any place of The Tripitaka directly, but it can be concluded that it is something relating to human’s life, as a residence, as a food source, as a medicine source and as a suitable place to develop oneself to achieve the ultimate goal of Buddhism which the Buddhist scholars also give the same meaning. On the contrary, the present Thai and international scholars give the meaning of environment as the things around human beings including all that are touchable, feelable or perceivable with those 5 senses and even the things that influence the minds, and also all the human activities.
For the concept of healing environment, the factors of the environment consist of food, air, water, residential setup, work place environment, architecture, landscape and fundamental services of the healthcare unit which also including practical services and the management of a healing daily life style such as relaxation, music, arts and the recreation of activity, lighting, colors, sound planning, temperature. The setting up of healing environment is not only effect to some kind of illness but it suitable for all kind of illness in order to live in a safety suitable and relax place.
The importance of the healthcare healing environment is both for the physical healing and the mental healing, because mental is the abstract part that perceiving through feeling. So the design of the mental healing environment is positively effect to the human being.
Healing is the holistically health management which to creates the harmonization of body, mind, social and spiritual. In considering of the meaning of “Healing”, which has a deeper dimension than “Curing” and what the clear result of healing is to reducing stress and anxiety for all concerning parties. So the method of creating healing environment can be divided into 3 parts, namely:
(1) Physical healing environment
(2) Mental healing environment and
(3) Social healing environment
The guideline of creating healthcare healing environment according to Theravāda Buddhist principles in order to activate the mental dimension of all healthcare staffs, mixture of the environmental esthetics concept which consist of an abstract inner environment and concrete outer environment with good atmosphere, warmth touch which could reduce stress, medical error and inflection. In addition, good condition of environment and reflect patients’ need bring to a faster recovery, which consist of 4 factors: (1) fundamental need (2) sense of place (3) Human being and (4) management. In practical, the efficiency healing environment must considering both dimension of body and mind. |
