A Comparative Study of Doctrines about Kataññū (Gratitude) in Theravada Buddhism and Hinduism

Abstract

ABSTRACT

The research is of 3 objectives namely :-  1) to study the principles of Kataññū (Gratitude) in Theravada Buddhism,  2) to study the principles of Kataññū (Gratitude) in Hinduism,  and 3) to compare the doctrines of Kataññū (Gratitude) in Theravada Buddhism and Hinduism. This is a comparative study by the documentary research.

From the study, it is found that :- In the perspective in Theravada Buddhism, Kataññū (Gratitude) means acknowledging what has been done that is, acknowledging the good done for our benefit, which has two kinds, namely,            1) gratitude to parents, teachers, preceptor, and the Buddha, and 2) gratitude to the Virtue.

      In the perspective in Hinduism, the gratitude means acknowledging and rejoices in what is done, which is divided into three kinds, namely, 1) the gratitude to God, it shows the respect to the God who create the world by the mental purity for attainment of the goal Hindu’s doctrines, 2) the gratitude to social person which repays the done favor in society with performing one’s duty completely, and 3) the gratitude to nature, which is the creation of conservation behavior by creation the natures to be shrine which is gods’ living such as forest, mountain, river, earth, sky, etc.

      Even though, both Buddhism and Hinduism are difference in the way of practice. The influence of two religions appears about the living together in Thai society, which is shown by the festival such as performing a ceremony for chanting parents' loving kindness, Loi Krathong festival, Songkran festival, etc.
